Deodorizing and Refreshing Yoga Clothes Between Washes
March 27, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

A single pair of leggings can go from fresh to unusable in one 90-minute class. The fix is immediate and takes thirty seconds, and it is a habit rather than a product.
Synthetic fabric does not absorb odor the way cotton does. Odor molecules sit on the surface of the fibre, which means they can be removed without washing the whole garment. This is what makes a mid-cycle refresh possible.
The thirty-second method
Hang the garment somewhere with airflow and leave it. That is the method. Most odor in performance knit is carried in residual moisture, and evaporation alone removes most of it within an hour.
Why damp storage is the real problem
Bacteria need moisture to multiply. A garment folded into a bag while warm and damp is close to ideal conditions, and four hours in there is enough for a noticeable smell. The same garment hung to dry and packed an hour later smells like nothing.
- Do not fold a damp garment into a bag; hang it first
- Do not leave a damp garment in a car
- Do not leave a damp bra in a locker overnight
- Dry the garment fully before deciding whether it needs washing
When a full wash is genuinely unnecessary
- 01The garment was only worn for an easy seated practice
- 02You did not sweat noticeably
- 03There is no visible mark or soil
- 04It dried fully within an hour
Not washing after every wear is fine for lightly used garments. It is the combination of heavy sweating and immediate storage that requires a wash.
The baking soda soak
For a garment that needs more than air but less than a wash: soak in cold water with a tablespoon of baking soda for thirty to sixty minutes, then rinse and dry. Baking soda is mildly alkaline and lifts the acid compounds that odor molecules are attached to.
When vinegar is worth it
White vinegar in cold water, one part to four parts water, soaked for an hour, neutralizes what baking soda loosens. Use it sparingly because excess vinegar can affect elastic over repeated exposure, and never combine the two in the same soak.
A note on fabric softener and odor
Fabric softener makes a garment smell fresh at the moment of application and less absorbent afterward. For activewear this is the opposite of what you want, because a less absorbent surface holds more moisture against the skin.
The best deodorizer is airflow. Everything else is a repair for a habit that airflow would have prevented.
What to check before you buy for deodorizing and refreshing yoga
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in deodorizing and refreshing yoga. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Pink Marshmallow Heather Alosoft High-Waist Intuition Capri is the piece we would test them against first.
- Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
- The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
- Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.
The rotation that works
Three pairs of leggings rotating on a five-day cycle never needs a mid-session refresh, because each pair has five days to dry fully. This is cheaper than any deodorizing product and it solves the problem rather than treating it.
