What to Wear to Your First Yoga Class
October 9, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

The brief for what to wear to your first yoga class is narrow: buying the right first piece and nothing else. Get that right and the rest of the outfit stops mattering. Below: what to look for, what to skip, and the checks that catch a bad fit early.
The single most common reason people do not return from a first class is not difficulty. It is having spent the entire hour thinking about whether they were dressed correctly. Here is exactly what you need, and it is less than you think.
The four things you actually need
- 01Leggings or fitted pants that you can move in without them riding up.
- 02A fitted top with a waistband or a length that stays put when you reach overhead.
- 03A small towel. Studios provide mats, blocks, and straps, but not towels.
- 04Water. A bottle, not just the fountain in the lobby.
That is the list. No mat of your own, no straps, no blocks, no special yoga towel, no cleansing wipes.
What the studio will have
Every studio we work with provides mats, blocks, and straps at no charge. If you are being asked to buy any of those before your first visit, that is a sales tactic, not a requirement. Props are included so you can find out whether you even need them.
Shoes: leave them outside
Most vinyasa and hatha studios are shoe-free. A handful of studios practice barefoot exclusively, so check their page when you book. If yours allows shoes, you will be asked to remove them anyway for balance work.
On feeling self-conscious
Almost everyone in your first class is also in their first class. Studios are filled with people who are acutely aware of how they look mid-pose, and nobody is looking at anyone else. Instructors are trained not to single out beginners, and the culture in a room where nobody has a mirror is different from a gym floor.
You are not behind. The people who look like they have been doing this for years were once exactly as stiff as you.
What to check before you buy for a what wear your first yoga class
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in a what wear your first yoga class. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Ivory Airlift High-Waist Mesh Infatuation Legging is the piece we would test them against first.
- Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
- The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
- Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.
What to do the night before
Eat normally and hydrate. Do not arrive having eaten nothing: standing postures on an empty stomach are genuinely unpleasant. Wear your leggings for an hour beforehand if you can, because that tells you whether the waistband stays put when you move, which no fitting room will.
Arrive ten minutes early. The first ten minutes of a class is where instructors describe the sequence and offer variations, and being late means spending the whole hour slightly behind in a room where you are already trying not to stand out.
