Building a Rotation That Survives a Busy Week
July 20, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

The rotation is the system that makes a small wardrobe work. It is a simple calculation, and getting it right removes the laundry anxiety from your week.
A rotation is not about variety. It is about making a small number of garments work harder by giving each one enough time between uses to be completely dry and odour free. Below: what to look for, what to skip, and the checks that catch a bad fit early.
The calculation
Take your weekly class count and divide by the number of garments in rotation. That is the number of days between washes each garment requires. For three classes a week with three pairs, that is one use per garment per week.
The seven-day threshold
Seven days is the practical minimum for a garment to be fully dry in the body of the fabric, not just on the surface. Three to four days is enough to prevent odour in a breathable fabric. One day is enough to make a garment unwearable if it is warm and damp.
- One day between uses: workable, but frequent washing shortens garment life
- Three to four days: comfortable for a weekly to twice-weekly schedule
- Seven days: the practical target for a reliable rotation
- Ten days or more: more garments than you need
Bras need a shorter rotation than leggings
A bra sits against warm skin directly and absorbs more than leggings. It also cannot be aired as effectively because of its construction. Most people need a two-bra rotation for three weekly classes.
Building the rotation
- 01Count your actual classes per week for the past month, not your intention
- 02Add twenty percent for the weeks you travel or miss classes
- 03Divide by seven to get the number of garments needed
- 04Buy the difference in the weight you actually practise at
- 05Do not buy color variants during this step; add those only once the rotation is complete
The airflow principle
A garment hung on a proper hanger with air moving around it dries far faster than one folded in a basket. The difference is large enough to reduce a four-day rotation to two days.
- Hang rather than fold for the drying period
- Use a hanger at the waistband, not the legs, which can stretch the fabric
- Dry in a ventilated space rather than a closed wardrobe
- Turn the garment inside out halfway through if it is thick
The rotation that works is the one you do not have to think about. If you are managing laundry to practise, the rotation is wrong.
Adjusting for intensity
A hot yoga class soaks a garment more than a restorative class. Practising three hot classes a week and treating them the same as three gentle classes is the most common rotation error.
- 01Heavy-sweat sessions get dedicated garments
- 02Light sessions can share with a normal rotation
- 03Always change out of a damp garment immediately rather than wearing it home
- 04Do not let a hot-sweat garment into the shared rotation until fully processed
What to check before you buy for the build rotation that works
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in the build rotation that works. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Navy Airlift High-Waist 7/8 Line Up Legging is the piece we would test them against first.
- Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
- The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
- Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.
When to expand
Expand when you are washing the same garment twice a week, not when a garment is worn out. Washing frequency is the honest signal that the rotation is undersized.
