Choosing Fabric Weight by Activity: Light, Mid, Heavy

April 12, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 2 MIN READ

Paradise Pink Airbrush Bandeau Bra

Fabric weight decides whether a garment suits a heated room or a cold morning. Here is how to match weight to what you actually do.

Fabric weight, measured in grams per square metre, is the spec that quietly decides whether a garment is comfortable. Too light and it goes sheer under stretch; too heavy and it traps heat and restricts movement. The right weight depends entirely on the activity.

Lightweight knits

  • Best for: hot yoga, heated studios, summer running.
  • Feel: airy, quick-drying, minimal insulation.
  • Trade-off: less opacity under deep stretch, less structure.
  • Typical range: the lightest end of the activewear spectrum.

In a heated room, weight is your enemy. A lightweight knit moves air and dries fast, which is why hot yoga kit is noticeably lighter than general training wear. The trade is opacity and durability: light knits go sheer more easily and abrade faster.

Fabric weight varies across the edit, and matching it to the room matters more than matching it to the trend.

Midweight knits

Midweight is the default for a reason. It covers general training, Pilates, and everyday wear, balancing opacity, structure, and breathability. If you own one pair of leggings for everything, this is the weight they should be.

Heavier knits

  • Best for: cold-weather training, outdoor practice, winter commuting.
  • Feel: structured, warmer, more compressive.
  • Trade-off: hot in heated rooms, slower to dry.
  • Bonus: heavier knits tend to be more opaque and hold shape longer.

Weight also affects how a garment looks off the mat. Heavier knits drape and hold structure, which is why they read as loungewear and streetwear more readily than light technical knits.

What to check before you buy for fabric weight activity

Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in fabric weight activity. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Paradise Pink Airbrush Bandeau Bra is the piece we would test them against first.

  • The band should sit level front and back and stay put when you lift your arms.
  • Jump once: if there is vertical movement the band is too loose, not the straps.
  • Check the strap join — a narrow join digs in after twenty minutes.

Matching weight to your week

  1. 01Heated practice: lightweight, with opacity checked under stretch.
  2. 02General training and Pilates: midweight.
  3. 03Cold outdoor sessions: heavier, layered.
  4. 04Travel: midweight, which handles the most situations per garment.
Weight is a climate decision. Match the fabric to the room, not to the trend.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is heavier fabric always better quality?
No. Heavier usually means more opaque and warmer, which is wrong for hot rooms. Quality is about knit structure and construction, not weight alone. It is the sort of difference you notice twenty minutes in, not on the hanger.
What weight is best for hot yoga?
The lightest knit that still passes the opacity test under stretch. Breathability matters more than structure in a heated room. Get that one thing right and most of the other decisions stop mattering.
Do heavier leggings last longer?
Often, because denser knits resist abrasion and thinning. But they are hotter and slower to dry, so the right weight still depends on the activity.
