How to Know When to Replace Your Performance Clothes
April 19, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

Performance garments fail before they look bad. There are four measurable signals, and by the time you notice one, the others are usually there too.
The problem with performance garments is that they degrade gradually enough that you adjust to the degradation rather than noticing it. You do not think the leggings feel loose. You think you feel loose. Below: what to look for, what to skip, and the checks that catch a bad fit early.
Signal one: the waistband needs pulling up
If you are adjusting the waistband during a class, or if you instinctively pull it up before you start, the elastic in the band has lost recovery. This is the earliest measurable signal and it is very reliable.
Signal two: the garment no longer returns to size
Stretch a panel of the fabric, hold it for ten seconds, release it, and watch. If it stays extended rather than snapping back, recovery is gone. This takes fifteen seconds and it works on any knit.
Signal three: sagging where there is no reason for sagging
A legging that has lost its hold at the seat or the knee has lost structural compression. It will read as a slightly different shape over the body, and most people attribute this to a weight change rather than to the garment.
Signal four: transparency
Any synthetic garment becomes slightly more transparent with wear as the fibre structure relaxes. It is subtle and it is not reversible. This is the one failure you cannot work around.
- The waistband no longer holds without adjustment
- The fabric does not snap back after a stretch test
- Sagging at the seat, knee, or elbow
- Any transparency when worn
- Seam pilling or abrasion concentrated at a load point
Expected lifespans, honestly
A well-constructed mid-weight legging, washed cold and air dried, gives around eighteen to twenty-four months of regular practice before the waistband loses recovery. Machine drying roughly halves this. Heavy daily use in hot yoga shortens it further because heat and sweat accelerate degradation.
Structured garments in heavier fabrics last longer. Lighter fabrics used in high heat wear out fastest, which is the opposite of what people expect.
How to extend the timeline
- 01Never machine dry; this is the single biggest factor
- 02Wash cold and skip fabric softener
- 03Do not wear the same garment on consecutive days
- 04Store folded rather than hung, since hanging stretches the waistband over time
- 05Keep the garment away from direct sunlight when storing
Hanging a pair of leggings by the waistband stretches the elastic over time. Fold them. This is a free extension of life that most people never think about.
What to check before you buy for when replace your performance
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in when replace your performance. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Black Moto Legging is the piece we would test them against first.
- Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
- The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
- Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.
The replacement decision
Replace when the waistband has lost recovery, not when you are bored of them. The second reason leads to overconsumption and the first does not. If the band still holds, the garment is still doing its job.
Keeping a garment in rotation because it still works, rather than because you like how it looks, is the single most sustainable habit in this guide.
