Macadamia Knit Salana Tank

The first class is the one most likely to be cancelled by logistics rather than intention. Everything here is chosen to remove decisions from the hour before you arrive.

Nobody cancels yoga because the clothes were wrong. People cancel yoga constantly for reasons that resolve to the same thing: getting ready felt like a problem. Here is how to remove that problem for the first class.

Dress for the studio, not for the gym

If the studio is a specific place with a specific floor and specific people, dressing for it matters. If you are nervous about what that looks like, a slightly more covered outfit helps and costs nothing.

  • Any top that stays put in forward fold; a fitted tee is ideal
  • Leggings or shorts in a color you do not mind sweating in
  • A layer over the top you can remove as you warm up
  • Flat, non-slip socks if the studio asks for them
Choosing an outfit you would be comfortable being photographed in removes a surprising amount of pre-class anxiety.

Arrive ten minutes early

Most studios want a new student ten minutes early to fill in a waiver and be shown around. This also removes the anxiety of walking into a room full of people already in a pose and having no idea where to put a bag.

You will not know what to do with your shoes, your water, or your phone if you have not seen the space. Ten minutes of that is the single largest source of first-class stress.

What to bring, in one bag

  1. 01Water, unless the studio provides it
  2. 02A small towel, because most people sweat more than they expect
  3. 03A hair tie, even if your hair is short
  4. 04Your phone, silenced
  5. 05Nothing else. You do not need a mat, a block, or a strap; studios supply all of them

What to expect in the room

Arrive facing away from the mirror if that is possible. Beginning students consistently position themselves near a wall so they can look, and experienced students position themselves facing the mirror to see their form. Copying the facing-mirror people on day one is a common and unnecessary mistake.

  • Most first classes are 60 minutes and heavily prop-based
  • The instructor will likely offer options for nearly every posture
  • Saying that you are new and asking for guidance is completely normal
  • You will not be asked to hold any shape you cannot safely hold

What not to do for a what wear your first class

Do not buy anything before your first class. Do not research outfits. Do not assume your current leggings will do and then discover in hour two that the waistband is a problem. Just wear something you have already worn to exercise and arrive.

The only thing that stops people going to a first class is not being ready. Clothes are the smallest part of ready, and the easiest to fix.

What to check before you buy for a what wear your first class

Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in a what wear your first class. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Macadamia Knit Salana Tank is the piece we would test them against first.

  • Reach overhead: the armhole should not pull the hem up with it.
  • Side bend in a mirror — a low cut gaps, a high cut restricts the shoulder.
  • The hem should stay put in a forward fold without constant tugging.

Afterwards

Plan to go again within a week. The most common reason people do not return is that they booked one class, felt rusty for three days, and let the momentum lapse. Book the second before you leave the studio.
