Sports Bra Fit, Explained Properly
April 14, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 4 MIN READ

The brief for sports bra fit explained is narrow: a fit you can check in under two minutes. Get that right and the rest of the outfit stops mattering. Below: what to look for, what to skip, and the checks that catch a bad fit early.
Sports bra fitting is confusing because a bra has two measurements that move independently, and the failure is usually in the one you are not thinking about. Below: what to look for, what to skip, and the checks that catch a bad fit early.
Band and cup are independent
The band is the horizontal measurement around the ribcage. The cup is the volume measurement. These two change independently over a life and independently through a weight change, and a bra that fits one does not automatically fit the other.
Most fitting problems are band problems. The cup is usually fine because the cup is determined by volume, which does not change as much as people assume.
The four failure modes
Failure one: the band rides up
The band riding up is the most common problem and the one with the clearest cause. The band is too loose, or it has stretched, or the straps are set too wide so they are pulling the band upward at the back.
The fix is the band. A properly fitted band should stay level all the way around and should not move more than a centimetre when you lift your arms overhead.
Failure two: straps dig in
This is usually the opposite problem. A band that is too tight forces the load onto the straps, and the straps respond by cutting in. This looks like a strap problem and it is actually a band problem.
Failure three: the cup gapes
Gaping at the cup usually means the band is too loose and the breast is sitting lower than the cup is shaped for. The cup has a defined volume and the breast is sitting below it.
Failure four: the underwire digs or rides
This is a cup geometry issue. The underwire should follow the breastbone and sit at the base of the breast. If it rides up, the band is too loose. If it digs at the sides, the cup is too shallow.
The fitting protocol
- 01Wear the bra you are testing and lean forward; the band should not move
- 02Check the level: it should be horizontal and not higher than the breastbone
- 03Lift both arms overhead; the band should not travel more than a centimetre
- 04Cross your arms in front and confirm the breasts do not move
- 05Check the underwire sits at the base of the breast, not on the breast
Adjustable bands solve most problems
If a bra has a multi-row adjustable band, you have one more degree of freedom than a pullover style. The band can be tightened without changing the cup volume, which resolves both riding up and gaping.
- Multi-row band for maximum adjustability
- Molded cups for shape retention across a long session
- Racerback or high-back for overhead movement
- Perforated or single-layer cups for hot yoga
The underbust seam position
For yoga specifically, the underband should sit just below the breastbone and stay there. Under a fitted top, this position is what makes the whole thing look intentional rather than accidental.
If the band is right, everything else tends to follow. If the band is wrong, no other adjustment rescues the fit.
What to check before you buy for sports bra fit explained
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in sports bra fit explained. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Navy Airlift Super Sleek Bra Tank is the piece we would test them against first.
- The band should sit level front and back and stay put when you lift your arms.
- Jump once: if there is vertical movement the band is too loose, not the straps.
- Check the strap join — a narrow join digs in after twenty minutes.
On replacing them
Replace when the band no longer feels snug at the hook closure you started with, or when the elastane in the band has visibly relaxed. Usually that is eighteen to thirty months of regular practice, less if you machine dry.
