How to Read a Legging Inseam and Find Your Length

Navy 7/8 High-Waist Airlift Legging

The inseam is the most useful number on a size chart and the one shoppers ignore most. Here is how to measure yours and match it.

Every fitting problem a legging can have traces back to two numbers: rise and inseam. Rise decides where the waistband sits; inseam decides where the hem lands. This guide covers inseam, because it is the easier of the two to measure and the more visible to get wrong.

How to measure your inseam

  1. 01Stand barefoot with your feet slightly apart, against a wall if possible.
  2. 02Have someone measure from your crotch seam straight down to your ankle bone.
  3. 03Keep the tape snug but not pressing into your leg.
  4. 04Repeat once: the two readings should be within a centimetre.

That number is your target inseam. A legging matching it will land at the ankle bone, which is where full length is designed to sit.

Matching it to a size chart

  • If the chart lists inseam by size, match your measurement directly.
  • If it lists one inseam for all sizes, the brand grades length poorly.
  • If the chart omits inseam entirely, look for length options (short, regular, long, tall).
  • If your measurement falls between two lengths, choose the longer one: a small pool is safer than a ride up the calf.
Length options are the clearest signal that a brand graded its patterns properly.

Why hem pooling happens

Pooling is what happens when the inseam is longer than your leg. The extra fabric has nowhere to go, so it gathers at the ankle. It is not a sizing problem, which is why sizing down never fixes it: the waist tightens, the hem barely moves.

The reverse, a legging that rides up the calf when you sit, means the inseam is too short for your leg, or the waistband is failing to hold the garment down.

What to check before you buy for legging inseam

Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in legging inseam. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Navy 7/8 High-Waist Airlift Legging is the piece we would test them against first.

  • Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
  • The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
  • Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.

The two-minute fix

Measure your inseam once, write it down, and use it for every future purchase. Combined with a rise measurement from a pair that fits at the waist, you will never need to guess again. Two numbers, measured once, replace an entire cycle of buying and returning.

The size label is marketing. The inseam and rise are the fit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a standard legging inseam?
It varies by brand, but most full-length leggings for average heights fall in a fairly tight range. What matters is matching your own measurement, not the average.
Should I measure inseam sitting or standing?
Standing. The crotch-to-ankle-bone measurement standing is the standard reference that size charts use. It is the sort of difference you notice twenty minutes in, not on the hanger.
What if my inseam is between two sizes?
Take the longer length. A slight pool at the ankle is more manageable than a legging that rides up the calf when you sit. Get that one thing right and most of the other decisions stop mattering.
