Pilling and How to Prevent It

Anthracite Airlift Winter Warm High-Waist Legging

Pilling is not a manufacturing defect. It is a predictable consequence of friction on any synthetic fibre, and knowing that tells you exactly which habits to change.

Those small balls on the surface of a garment are called pills. They form when loose fibres tangle into a knot through repeated friction. Understanding the mechanism tells you which parts of your routine matter.

Where pilling appears first

  • The seat of leggings, where denim and towels rub during practice
  • The inner thigh, where thighs contact in movement
  • The underarm, where the arm crosses the torso
  • Any area that sits against a coarse surface while moving
Pilling concentrates where friction is highest and most repeated. The seat of a legging is the first place to look.

Friction sources you can remove

  1. 01Do not wear performance leggings under denim; the denim fibres cause it directly
  2. 02Stop sitting on textured gym benches in synthetic bottoms
  3. 03Separate synthetic knits from towels in the wash; towel lint is a major cause
  4. 04Avoid wearing the same garment for studio practice and long-distance sitting

The wash settings that matter

Heat and agitation are the two variables. High heat damages fibres into loose fragments more quickly. High agitation twists loose fibres together faster. Cold water with a normal cycle is enough for synthetic knits.

  • Cold water, thirty degrees or below
  • Gentle or normal cycle, never a heavy-duty one
  • Never wash with denim, towels, or anything with a rough surface
  • Do not use a lint roller on the garment; it pulls fibres out rather than removing them

Removing existing pills

Use a fabric shaver, not a razor. A fabric shaver cuts the pills flush with the surface. A razor catches fibres and pulls them out of the yarn, which makes the thin spot worse over time.

For light surface pilling, a pilling comb or even a piece of fine-grit sandpaper, used very gently in one direction, works. The rule is that you should be removing the knot, not the fibre.

Pilling that appears within the first three wears is a quality signal. Pilling that appears after a year is a friction signal.

What actually determines pill resistance

Yarn construction matters more than fabric brand. A tightly twisted yarn resists abrasion better than a loosely twisted one. Fabric weight matters too: heavier knits have more yarn per square centimetre to lose before the surface changes appearance.

Anti-pilling finishes exist and they help, but they are surface treatments that wear off. A tightly constructed yarn is the durable answer.

What not to do for pilling and how prevent it

Do not shave a garment you care about before it pills. The friction of the razor on intact fibres causes the pilling you were trying to prevent. Do not pull pills off by hand; that is the worst option and it damages the yarn permanently.

What to check before you buy for pilling and how prevent it

Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in pilling and how prevent it. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Anthracite Airlift Winter Warm High-Waist Legging is the piece we would test them against first.

  • Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
  • The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
  • Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.

The realistic expectation

Every synthetic garment pills eventually. The goal is not zero pilling. The goal is to delay it by a year and to keep it at a level that does not show in natural light. Cold water, no denim, and a fabric shaver once a year will do that.
