How to Wash Performance Fabric Without Ruining It
March 19, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

Heat is what destroys elastic. Almost every mistake people make with activewear comes down to a single variable, and it is one you can turn off.
There is one mechanism behind most activewear failure: heat degrades elastic fibres. Everything else in this guide is either avoiding that mechanism or preventing secondary problems. Below: what to look for, what to skip, and the checks that catch a bad fit early.
The rule
Cold water, low heat or no heat, air dry. That is the entire protocol. Everything below is detail on why those three things matter.
Water temperature
Thirty degrees celsius or below. Hotter water is better at removing body oils, and body oils are what causeodor to set into synthetic fabric over time. But the trade is not worth it, because the same heat that dissolves oil also permanently weakens the elastane.
- Thirty degrees or below, always
- A cool cycle is sufficient for synthetic knits; they do not need hot
- Pre-treat with a solution-safe spot remover for oil-based stains
- Do not soak activewear overnight, even in cold water
Detergent choice
Use a detergent without enzymes, or a detergent intended for technical fabrics. Standard enzymes break down protein-based stains, and synthetic knits are not protein, so the enzyme does nothing useful while the surfactants accumulate in the fabric with each wash.
Skip fabric softener entirely. It leaves a coating on the fibre that reduces wicking behaviour, which means the garment stops managing moisture properly. That is a permanent change, not a temporary one.
The mesh bag matters more than you think
- 01Turn the garment inside out
- 02Close all zips and fasten all hooks
- 03Place it in a mesh wash bag
- 04Wash with similar synthetic items, not with towels or denim
- 05Do not overload the drum; items need room to move
Denim and velcro are the two common enemies of a synthetic garment in a wash cycle. Microfibres from denim catch on performance knit and cause the pilling that people blame on quality.
Drying
Air dry, laid flat or hung, away from direct sun. This is the step most people skip and it is the one that matters most.
- No tumble dryer, ever, for performance knits
- Direct sunlight fades even dark colours noticeably
- Do not dry a garment folded over a hanger; the fold sets a crease
- If you must machine dry, use a 10 minute no-heat cycle to release dampness only
If you only change one habit, make it air drying. It is free and it extends garment life more than anything else on this list.
What to check before you buy for how wash performance fabric
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in how wash performance fabric. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Black Airbrush Mid-Rise Legging is the piece we would test them against first.
- Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
- The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
- Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.
Odor, when it has already set
Soak the garment in cold water with a tablespoon of baking soda for an hour, then wash as normal. For a garment you cannot get clean at all, soak it overnight in cold water with a small amount of white vinegar, then wash.
Do not try to solve odor with heat. Hot water makes it worse because it sets the oils into the fibre.
