Vacation Training: Layering by Season
August 26, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

Treat yoga on vacation as a fit problem before a style problem. Fit behaviours, fabric weight, and the mistakes that shorten its life. Keep the base, change the weight, adjust the layer.
The brief for yoga on vacation is narrow: packing into a small bag. Get that right and the rest of the outfit stops mattering. We keep it to what actually changes the outcome — no fabric marketing.
Layering for packing into a small bag
The mistake is layering for the walk rather than the room. Dress for packing into a small bag, then add the piece you will remove in the first five minutes.
Rise is the variable people overlook. Measure from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband and compare it with your torso rather than the size chart — the same number lands differently on a long torso than a short one.
Fabric behaviour, in practice in vacation
The knit matters more than the fibre name on the label. For packing into a small bag, look for recovery — the fabric should spring back where it is stretched, not stay extended after you move.
None of this requires a large wardrobe. It requires one piece chosen for packing into a small bag, and a plan for the fact that bag space is limited and you may not get a chance to wash anything.
Where comfort fails first
Comfort fails at predictable places on a legging — the waistband first, then wherever the fabric folds. For packing into a small bag, check each one before you commit to it.
Run the checks in the order you would actually notice a problem — movement first, then heat, then time. A piece that fails any of the three will fail in the session rather than in the mirror.
What to check before you buy in vacation
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in vacation. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Bluestone Airbrush Race Pace Short Sleeve is the piece we would test them against first.
- The sleeve seam should sit at the top of the shoulder, not below it.
- Check it under a layer: a tight sleeve bunches at the arm.
- Lift the arm to shoulder height and check the hem stays down.
What goes in and what stays out
Everything in the bag should earn its place. For packing into a small bag, that is the legging, a layer, and one thing you will be glad of afterwards.
None of this needs a large wardrobe. It needs the right legging, checked properly, and a habit of air drying.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- How do I know if the fit is right?
- Check it through a full range of motion and again seated: The waistband has to stay put when you fold forward, and the fabric needs to stay opaque through a deep squat.
- What fabric weight should I choose?
- Mid-weight for most of the year. Go lighter when packing into a small bag means heat, denser when you start cold. If it still bothers you after two wears, it is the cut, not the break-in.
- When should I replace it?
- When the waistband stops holding, or the fabric no longer returns to size. This is the part most guides skip, and the part that decides whether the piece gets worn.
