YOGA
Cruise Training: Layering by Season
September 6, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 2 MIN READ

For yoga on a cruise, one decision matters more than the rest — the legging. Fit behaviours, fabric weight, and the mistakes that shorten its life. Keep the base, change the weight, adjust the layer.
Most advice for yoga on a cruise stops at the fabric name. What actually decides whether the session works is how the legging behaves once you start moving. This guide covers fabric, fit and the three checks worth running before you commit.
How to layer this for a cruise
Carry one more layer than you think you need. Bag space is limited and you may not get a chance to wash anything. A layer you never take off is still doing its job.
Rise is the variable people overlook. Measure from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband and compare it with your torso rather than the size chart — the same number lands differently on a long torso than a short one.
Adjusting across the year
Across the year only two things change: the weight of the knit and the layer you carry. The legging itself can stay the same.
The practical constraint is simple: bag space is limited and you may not get a chance to wash anything. Plan around it and most of the other decisions make themselves.
What the knit actually does
Two garments with the same composition can behave completely differently. What you are checking is how the cloth responds to packing into a small bag, and that only shows up once you move in it.
If you are choosing between two that both fit, take the one that still works when the plan changes. Sessions rarely go exactly as intended.
What to check before you buy for a cruise
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in a cruise. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Dune Grass Ribbed Modal Long Sleeve is the piece we would test them against first.
- Push the sleeve to the elbow and check it stays there in a forward fold.
- The cuff should sit at the wrist without covering the hand.
- Raise both arms: a narrow armhole pulls the hem up.
What breaks down mid-session
Comfort fails at predictable places on a legging — the waistband first, then wherever the fabric folds. For packing into a small bag, check each one before you commit to it.
Keep it simple. One legging that handles packing into a small bag, one layer, and a rotation that lets everything dry.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- How do I know if the fit is right?
- Check it through a full range of motion and again seated: The waistband has to stay put when you fold forward, and the fabric needs to stay opaque through a deep squat.
- What fabric weight should I choose?
- Mid-weight for most of the year. Go lighter when packing into a small bag means heat, denser when you start cold. Check it in a mirror in the position you will hold, not standing straight.
- When should I replace it?
- When the waistband stops holding, or the fabric no longer returns to size. If it still bothers you after two wears, it is the cut, not the break-in.
