YOGA
Mountain Training: Match the Method to the Goal
July 26, 2025 · Alo Editorial · 2 MIN READ

Treat yoga in the mountains as a fit problem before a style problem. What to buy, what to skip, and what to check in the mirror. Both options are laid out with the trade-off stated plainly.
What yoga in the mountains asks for is unglamorous: handling a temperature swing. This is how to get there without buying twice. Read it once and you will not need to re-read it mid-session.
What you gain and what you give up for the mountains
Compare on the two things that matter here — how the legging handles handling a temperature swing, and how long it keeps doing it. Everything else is noise.
Rise is the variable people overlook. Measure from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband and compare it with your torso rather than the size chart — the same number lands differently on a long torso than a short one.
What to pay for
Spend on the legging first — it carries handling a temperature swing. Everything else can be cheap without much consequence.
The practical constraint is simple: the same session can start cold and finish warm, or the other way round. Plan around it and most of the other decisions make themselves.
Where comfort fails first
If you only test one thing, test the waistband. It is where a legging either disappears or becomes the whole session.
Run the checks in the order you would actually notice a problem — movement first, then heat, then time. A piece that fails any of the three will fail in the session rather than in the mirror.
What to check before you buy for the mountains
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in the mountains. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Navy Airlift Strength Extreme High-Waist 7/8 Legging is the piece we would test them against first.
- Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
- The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
- Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.
Rotation, honestly
Work out how often you practise, then add one. That is the number of leggings you need — because the same session can start cold and finish warm, or the other way round.
Most activewear complaints are care problems wearing a fit disguise.
Treat yoga in the mountains as a small system: one reliable legging, one removable layer, and a wash routine that does not shorten its life.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- What makes yoga in the mountains different from a normal session?
- The same session can start cold and finish warm, or the other way round. That single difference decides most of what you wear. Check it in a mirror in the position you will hold, not standing straight.
- Can I use the same legging for other practice?
- Usually yes, if it passes the fit test here. The waistband has to stay put when you fold forward, and the fabric needs to stay opaque through a deep squat.
- What should I buy first?
- The legging. Everything else can be adjusted later without consequence. If it still bothers you after two wears, it is the cut, not the break-in.
