YOGA
The Student Training Decision Guide
June 29, 2025 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

Treat yoga for students as a fit problem before a style problem. The checks that matter, in the order that saves the most time. Both options are laid out with the trade-off stated plainly.
What yoga for students asks for is unglamorous: the session in front of you. This is how to get there without buying twice. This guide covers fabric, fit and the three checks worth running before you commit.
What you gain and what you give up: what changes in the students
Compare on the two things that matter here — how the legging handles the session in front of you, and how long it keeps doing it. Everything else is noise.
Opacity is a fabric weight problem, not a colour problem. If a pair goes sheer in a forward fold, no darker shade will rescue it; the knit is simply too light for the stretch being asked of it.
Where the money goes
Spend on the legging first — it carries the session in front of you. Everything else can be cheap without much consequence.
Two things are true at once: the session in front of you matters, and you want to think about clothing once and then stop. Both point at the same shortlist.
What breaks down mid-session
Comfort fails at predictable places on a legging — the waistband first, then wherever the fabric folds. For the session in front of you, check each one before you commit to it.
Run the checks in the order you would actually notice a problem — movement first, then heat, then time. A piece that fails any of the three will fail in the session rather than in the mirror.
What to check before you buy: what changes in the students
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in the students. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Java Brown Airlift High-Waist 7/8 Line Up Legging is the piece we would test them against first.
- Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
- The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
- Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.
How many you actually need
If you are washing once a week, you need one more legging than you think. Elastane needs time to recover, and you want to think about clothing once and then stop.
Buy for the session you actually have, not the one you intend to have.
Keep it simple. One legging that handles the session in front of you, one layer, and a rotation that lets everything dry.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- What should I pack for yoga for students?
- The legging, one layer that opens fully, and a dry change for afterwards. This is the part most guides skip, and the part that decides whether the piece gets worn.
- Is a more expensive legging worth it?
- Usually yes for the base layer and no for everything else. Spend where the session in front of you is carried. It is worth a minute before you buy and about ten seconds after that.
- How do I stop it smelling?
- Do not store it damp. Most odour is a storage problem, not a wash problem. Fabric marketing will not tell you this; the fit will, immediately.
