How to Compare Student Training Choices
June 24, 2025 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

Treat yoga for students as a fit problem before a style problem. Here is how to check the fit before you commit. Both options are laid out with the trade-off stated plainly.
Most advice for yoga for students stops at the fabric name. What actually decides whether the session works is how the legging behaves once you start moving. Everything here is checkable in a mirror in under two minutes.
Two options, side by side: what changes in the students
One option is more comfortable and wears out sooner. The other lasts longer and runs warm. You want to think about clothing once and then stop. That is the whole trade-off.
Rise is the variable people overlook. Measure from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband and compare it with your torso rather than the size chart — the same number lands differently on a long torso than a short one.
Where to start shopping
If you buy one thing, buy the legging. Everything else is adjustable later, and you want to think about clothing once and then stop.
What separates a workable kit from a frustrating one here is how you handle the session in front of you. Get that right and everything after it is preference.
How the fabric behaves
Two garments with the same composition can behave completely differently. What you are checking is how the cloth responds to the session in front of you, and that only shows up once you move in it.
Run the checks in the order you would actually notice a problem — movement first, then heat, then time. A piece that fails any of the three will fail in the session rather than in the mirror.
What to check before you buy: what changes in the students
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in the students. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Brownstone High-Waist Airlift Legging is the piece we would test them against first.
- Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
- The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
- Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.
The three checks before you commit
Run three checks before you keep anything: the waistband has to stay put when you fold forward, and the fabric needs to stay opaque through a deep squat. Do all three standing and again seated, because you want to think about clothing once and then stop.
The right kit is the one you stop noticing halfway through.
Treat yoga for students as a small system: one reliable legging, one removable layer, and a wash routine that does not shorten its life.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- How do I know if the fit is right?
- Check it through a full range of motion and again seated: The waistband has to stay put when you fold forward, and the fabric needs to stay opaque through a deep squat.
- What fabric weight should I choose?
- Mid-weight for most of the year. Go lighter when the session in front of you means heat, denser when you start cold. It is also the cheapest thing to fix — usually a size or a wash habit.
- When should I replace it?
- When the waistband stops holding, or the fabric no longer returns to size. Most people solve it by buying more, which is rarely the actual answer.
