YOGA
Group Training: A 4-Week Setup
August 7, 2024 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

Treat yoga for group classes as a fit problem before a style problem. A short guide to getting it right the first time. Follow the sequence in order and you can skip the guesswork.
Yoga for group classes is less about the newest fabric and more about the legging that stays quiet while you move. We keep it to what actually changes the outcome — no fabric marketing.
How many you actually need when you train in the group classes
If you are washing once a week, you need one more legging than you think. Elastane needs time to recover, and you want to think about clothing once and then stop.
Seam placement decides whether you can wear a pair twice in a week. A flat inner-thigh seam stops the chafe that shows up around minute thirty; a raised seam guarantees it.
What goes in and what stays out
Everything in the bag should earn its place. For the session in front of you, that is the legging, a layer, and one thing you will be glad of afterwards.
None of this requires a large wardrobe. It requires one piece chosen for the session in front of you, and a plan for the fact that you want to think about clothing once and then stop.
A four-step setup
Four moves: pick the legging for the session in front of you, verify the waistband has to stay put when you fold forward, and the fabric needs to stay opaque through a deep squat, add one removable layer, and plan the walk home.
Buy one, wear it twice, then decide about a second. Almost every fit problem is visible by the second wear, and none of them are visible on the hanger.
- Choose the legging that handles the session in front of you.
- Verify the fit through a full range of motion.
- Add one layer you can remove without stopping.
- Decide what you will wear afterwards.
What to check before you buy when you train in the group classes
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in the group classes. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Black Work It Mini Skirt is the piece we would test them against first.
- Check the short underneath before the skirt — it is what does the work.
- The waistband should not twist when you move.
- Sit and stand: the hem should not need rearranging.
The list you can run in a minute
Write the list down once and stop re-deciding. The items that matter for the session in front of you do not change from week to week.
None of this needs a large wardrobe. It needs the right legging, checked properly, and a habit of air drying.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- How do I know if the fit is right?
- Check it through a full range of motion and again seated: The waistband has to stay put when you fold forward, and the fabric needs to stay opaque through a deep squat.
- What fabric weight should I choose?
- Mid-weight for most of the year. Go lighter when the session in front of you means heat, denser when you start cold. Most people solve it by buying more, which is rarely the actual answer.
- When should I replace it?
- When the waistband stops holding, or the fabric no longer returns to size. Check it in a mirror in the position you will hold, not standing straight.
