YOGA
3 Layover Training Reminders
February 16, 2025 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

Treat yoga during a layover as a fit problem before a style problem. What to buy, what to skip, and what to check in the mirror. The list is short on purpose — these are the ones that matter.
Treat yoga during a layover as a fit problem before a style problem. The legging either handles packing into a small bag or it does not, and no layering fixes the second case. Everything here is checkable in a mirror in under two minutes.
The errors that cost the most for a layover
Do not size down for compression, do not tumble dry, and do not judge a legging after one wear. Bag space is limited and you may not get a chance to wash anything.
Seam placement decides whether you can wear a pair twice in a week. A flat inner-thigh seam stops the chafe that shows up around minute thirty; a raised seam guarantees it.
- 01Sizing down as a default.
- 02Machine drying performance knit.
- 03Wearing the same piece on consecutive days.
The first thing to go wrong
If you only test one thing, test the waistband. It is where a legging either disappears or becomes the whole session.
What separates a workable kit from a frustrating one here is how you handle packing into a small bag. Get that right and everything after it is preference.
Sizing the rotation
If you are washing once a week, you need one more legging than you think. Elastane needs time to recover, and bag space is limited and you may not get a chance to wash anything.
Run the checks in the order you would actually notice a problem — movement first, then heat, then time. A piece that fails any of the three will fail in the session rather than in the mirror.
What to check before you buy for a layover
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in a layover. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Dune Grass Ribbed Cropped Whisper Cardigan is the piece we would test them against first.
- Push the sleeve to the elbow and check it stays there in a forward fold.
- The cuff should sit at the wrist without covering the hand.
- Raise both arms: a narrow armhole pulls the hem up.
Fixes that pay off immediately
The fastest improvement is usually a fit adjustment rather than a purchase. Bag space is limited and you may not get a chance to wash anything.
Buy for the session you actually have, not the one you intend to have.
None of this needs a large wardrobe. It needs the right legging, checked properly, and a habit of air drying.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- How do I know if the fit is right?
- Check it through a full range of motion and again seated: The waistband has to stay put when you fold forward, and the fabric needs to stay opaque through a deep squat.
- What fabric weight should I choose?
- Mid-weight for most of the year. Go lighter when packing into a small bag means heat, denser when you start cold. Check it in a mirror in the position you will hold, not standing straight.
- When should I replace it?
- When the waistband stops holding, or the fabric no longer returns to size. If it still bothers you after two wears, it is the cut, not the break-in.
