What to Wear to Hot Yoga, and Why It Is Different

Jungle Yoga Strap

Hot yoga inverts every rule you have learned about studio clothing. Less is not more here. The correct garment is the one that gets sweat off your skin and dries before you leave.

In every other studio context, more coverage means more comfort. In a room at 38 degrees with 60 percent humidity, that logic inverts. The correct garment is the one that moves perspiration away from your skin and lets it leave.

Fabric weight comes first

This is the one decision that matters. Anything above roughly 260 grams per square meter is too warm for a heated room, regardless of how good it looks on a hanger. The target range is 180 to 220 grams, which is lightweight and cool from the moment you put it on.

A lightweight knit is the single most important choice for hot yoga, and it is the one most people get wrong.

No brushed interior, no exceptions

Brushing traps air for insulation. In a heated room that insulation works against you in exactly the way a plastic bag over your head works against you. Unbrushed smooth knit only.

Shorts beat leggings in the heat

  • More surface area for evaporation
  • Less fabric holding moisture against the skin
  • Shorts dry inside one towel, leggings do not
  • Most hot yoga studios offer shorts as standard for this reason

This is not a preference. A wet legging at the end of a 90-minute hot class is a genuinely unpleasant twenty-minute problem, and it is why most people who practice hot yoga consistently switch to shorts permanently.

The bra is harder than it looks

Everything the body produces in a hot room stays against the skin. A dense foam-cup bra holds heat and moisture for the entire class. A single-layer or perforated construction moves significantly more air, even with similar support.

  1. 01Look for single-layer cups rather than thick molded foam
  2. 02Avoid bonded seams, which seal the fabric completely
  3. 03Check that the band is adjustable, because a tight band traps sweat
  4. 04A racerback opens up the upper back, which is a large sweat area

What to bring for what wear hot yoga

  • A large towel, because studio towels are shared and often thin
  • A full water bottle with a lid that works one-handed
  • A change of clothes for afterward, which is not optional in this case
  • A dry top for the walk out; a damp top over a car seat is unpleasant
Hot yoga does not require you to suffer. It requires you to stop treating coverage as warmth and start treating it as a surface for trapped moisture.

What to check before you buy for what wear hot yoga

Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in what wear hot yoga. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Jungle Yoga Strap is the piece we would test them against first.

  • Try it in the position you will actually hold, not standing straight.
  • Check the seams against your skin — a flat seam only rubs after twenty minutes.
  • Wash it once before you judge the fit; knit relaxes about half a size.

After the class

Do not sit in wet clothing for the drive home. Change immediately, put the damp garments in a bag, and let them air out rather than folding them into a bag while warm. Most odor problems in hot yoga clothing are actually a wet-garment storage problem, not a fabric problem.

Warm damp synthetic fabric in a closed bag for four hours is close to the ideal conditions for bacterial growth. If your gym bag smells, this is why.
