Sports Bra Impact Levels Explained: Low, Medium, High

Lunar Grey Airlift Line Up Bra

Impact levels describe how much support a bra is engineered to give, based on how much your body moves. Here is what each level means and how to choose.

Every sports bra is designed around an impact level: low, medium, or high. The label describes the movement the bra is built to control, and it is the most useful filter when shopping, because it maps directly onto what you actually do.

Choosing the wrong level is the most common reason a sports bra feels either suffocating or useless. Here is how the levels work.

Low impact

Low impact covers movement where the torso stays relatively stable: yoga, Pilates, barre, walking, and everyday wear. Bras in this category are lighter, less compressive, and often unstructured. They prioritise comfort and breathability over holding everything still.

  • Typical activities: yoga, Pilates, stretching, walking.
  • Construction: light compression, sometimes removable padding.
  • Feel: closest to a normal bra, easiest to wear all day.
  • Trade-off: not enough support for running or jumping.

Medium impact

Medium impact is the middle ground, built for movement with moderate vertical bounce: dance classes, cycling, hiking, light jogging, and most gym training. These bras add more compression and usually a more structured band and straps.

This is the most versatile level. If you do one class that involves jumping and one that does not, a good medium impact bra covers both.

The edit includes bras across all three impact levels, because the right one depends on the class, not the brand.

High impact

High impact is engineered for running, HIIT, and anything with repeated jumping. These bras maximise compression and encapsulation, with wider straps, a firmer band, and often a racerback or enclosed construction. They feel deliberately firm, because they are doing the most work.

The trade is comfort: a high impact bra worn for yoga will feel restrictive and hot, which is why wearing the right level matters more than buying the most supportive bra available.

What to check before you buy for the sports bra impact levels

Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in the sports bra impact levels. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Lunar Grey Airlift Line Up Bra is the piece we would test them against first.

  • The band should sit level front and back and stay put when you lift your arms.
  • Jump once: if there is vertical movement the band is too loose, not the straps.
  • Check the strap join — a narrow join digs in after twenty minutes.

How to choose

  1. 01List the activities where you move the most vertically.
  2. 02Match the highest of them: running means high, regardless of what else you do.
  3. 03If in doubt between two levels, size up in compression rather than down.
  4. 04Check that the band, not the straps, does most of the holding.
Impact level is a description of the movement, not a quality rating. Higher is not better.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I use a high impact bra for yoga?
You can, but it will feel restrictive and hot during slower movement. Most people are more comfortable in a low impact bra for floor-based practice.
How do I know if a bra is the right impact level?
Do a jump test in the fitting room. If there is significant vertical movement, step up a level. If you cannot breathe deeply, step down.
Do impact levels standardise across brands?
The categories are consistent, but the interpretation varies. Always test the actual bra rather than trusting the label alone. It is the sort of difference you notice twenty minutes in, not on the hanger.
