The Spin Class Outfit
August 27, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 2 MIN READ

The brief for spin class is narrow: getting the fit right before anything else. Get that right and the rest of the outfit stops mattering. Below: what to look for, what to skip, and the checks that catch a bad fit early.
Spin looks simple and is not. You are seated and bent forward for forty-five minutes of repeating motion, generating heat fast in a hot, still room. The contact points are the saddle and the inner thigh, and those are exactly where cheap kit fails. The outfit is a chafe-management problem above all.
The saddle problem
- Seams in the wrong place rub within minutes.
- Cotton holds sweat and increases friction.
- Loose fabric bunches under you on the saddle.
- A short that rides up creates a new seam line.
- The inner thigh needs smooth, flat fabric.
You do not need a padded cycling short for a studio class, but you do need a short cut for the saddle. A legging or tight short with a flat gusset and no centre seam beats a padded short that bunches. The goal is no new seam where you meet the saddle.
Top and feet
Up top, heat is the issue. A light, breathable tank or tee that wicks keeps you from soaking through. On the feet, most studios clip into the bike, so bring compatible shoes or use the studio pair. Avoid long lounge pants that catch the crank.
What to check before you buy for a spin class
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in a spin class. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Platinum Grey Wool Cashmere New Class Sweatpant is the piece we would test them against first.
- The waistband should hold without a drawstring doing all the work.
- Check the taper: a wide ankle catches on a mat.
- Knee the fabric — heavy fleece bags out, a knit blend recovers.
What to bring for a spin class
- 01A full water bottle; spin dehydrates fast.
- 02A small towel for the handlebars and face.
- 03A hair tie if your hair is long.
- 04A layered top you can peel if the room is hot.
- 05A post-class layer for the walk out.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- Do I need padded cycling shorts for spin?
- Usually not for a studio class. A smooth, flat short without a centre seam prevents chafe without the bulk of a padded short. It is the sort of difference you notice twenty minutes in, not on the hanger.
- Why is spin so sweaty compared to other classes?
- You are seated and bent forward with no cooling from movement through air, in a hot still room. Heat builds fast and stays. Get that one thing right and most of the other decisions stop mattering.
- Can I wear leggings to spin?
- Yes if they are tight and seam-free at the saddle. Avoid anything that bunches or catches the pedal crank. It is also the cheapest thing to fix — usually a size or a wash habit.
