Layering for Transit and Practice Without Overheating
April 4, 2026 · Alo Editorial · 3 MIN READ

The hardest part of any studio practice is the ten minutes before and after it. The clothing decision for those twenty minutes is separate from the decision for the practice itself.
Nobody practises in a hoodie. Everybody needs something to wear over their practice clothes on the way there. That garment has a job, and choosing it well is what makes winter attendance possible. Below: what to look for, what to skip, and the checks that catch a bad fit early.
The transit layer must open
The reason oversized hoodies fail as transit layers is that they are designed to be worn closed. You need something that opens fully, that you can get off your shoulders the moment you enter the studio, and that you can hold rather than stuff into a bag.
- A zip-through is the correct answer because it opens completely
- An open cardigan with no closure works nearly as well
- A pullover can work if it is light enough to tie at the waist
- Anything with a hood you cannot remove is not a transit layer
Fabric weight for the transit layer
The transit layer needs to handle the outside temperature, but you will be wearing it over a garment that is already warm. Anything above 300 grams per square meter becomes a problem the moment you walk inside.
This is where a lightweight sweatshirt in a heavier knit generally beats a heavier one. It looks substantial enough for cold weather and is light enough to carry.
Managing the wet garment problem
After practice, the outer layer goes on over damp clothing and then sits in a bag for the rest of the day. This is the garment that will smell if you do not handle it.
Carry your practice clothes in a separate bag or a plastic bag inside the larger bag. Then the outer layer stays dry and the damp garment is contained rather than spreading moisture into everything.
The bag packing order
- 01Outer layer worn on the way there, then worn again on the way home
- 02Practice clothes in a separate sealed bag, packed last so they sit on top
- 03Shoes and socks in a separate compartment
- 04Water bottle at the top so it is the first thing out
What about leggings under jeans
Wearing leggings under jeans for transit is more common than any other practice-clothing hack and it works. Two caveats: make sure the leggings are seamless at the seat and waist so nothing prints through, and choose jeans with a straight or wide leg so the leggings silhouette does not read as a mistake.
Cold-weather specifics
- Two thin layers beat one thick layer because you can remove the top one
- Warm up faster in a warm room wearing a layer, then remove it
- Hands and feet are usually the real cold problem, not the torso
- A long tank under the outer layer keeps the waist warm, which most people underestimate
You will attend more classes in winter because the transit is easier. The transit layer is a scheduling tool, not a style choice.
What to check before you buy for layering transit and practice
Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in layering transit and practice. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Platinum Grey Wool Cashmere Ribbed Noble Full Zip Hoodie is the piece we would test them against first.
- The shoulder seam should sit on the shoulder, not halfway down the arm.
- Check the cuff: a loose cuff drags when you reach.
- Zip it fully — a zip that bows at the waist is the wrong size.
The purchase rule
Buy the transit layer in a color that works with your everyday coat. If it only goes to yoga, it will be the layer you do not bother to bring.
