Preparing for Your First Pilates Class

Anthracite High-Waist Airlift Legging

The brief for first pilates class is narrow: buying the right first piece and nothing else. Get that right and the rest of the outfit stops mattering. Below: what to look for, what to skip, and the checks that catch a bad fit early.

First-class outfit anxiety is real, and it is almost always misplaced. Studios are full of people in plain leggings and a t-shirt, and nobody is evaluating anyone else. The goal is simply to wear something fitted that you can move in.

The default that always works

  1. 01Fitted leggings, any length, in an opaque knit.
  2. 02A fitted t-shirt or tank you already own.
  3. 03Socks, plus grip socks if the studio is reformer or barre based.
  4. 04A water bottle and a small towel if the studio does not provide them.

That is the entire outfit. It works in mat classes, reformer classes, and anything in between. The only variable is the socks, and the studio will tell you when you book.

A plain fitted outfit is the correct answer for a first class, in every format.

The two things to check before you go

  • Opacity: hold the leggings to the light and stretch them, since first classes involve a lot of new positions.
  • Waistband: make sure it stays put when you sit and reach, since reformer work involves both.

What not to worry about

Brands, matching sets, and looking like the other people in the room. Pilates studios are notably uncompetitive about clothing, and a first class in a plain outfit is entirely normal. Save the considered outfit for when you know what the class actually demands.

What to check before you buy for a first pilates class

Two pieces can look identical on the hanger and behave differently in a first pilates class. The checks below are the ones that catch it early. Anthracite High-Waist Airlift Legging is the piece we would test them against first.

  • Squat test in a mirror: the fabric should go opaque, not sheer.
  • The waistband should sit flat at your natural waist without rolling when you fold forward.
  • Check the inseam against your height — a 7/8 length on a tall frame is a crop.

One upgrade worth making

Barre and Pilates overlap in fitted bottoms and grip socks, but barre adds overhead arm work and constant bar contact. A secure top matters more in barre; supine comfort matters more on a reformer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should I not wear to a first Pilates class?
Anything loose that will ride up or fall in your face, and anything you cannot see through a stretch test for opacity. It is the sort of difference you notice twenty minutes in, not on the hanger.
Do I need to buy special Pilates clothes?
No. Fitted leggings and a fitted top from any activewear range work for a first class. Buy specifics once you know the format. Get that one thing right and most of the other decisions stop mattering.
Will the studio tell me what to bring?
Usually yes, in the booking confirmation: grip socks, mat, water. If not, ask when you arrive. It is also the cheapest thing to fix — usually a size or a wash habit.
